Tops Markets contacted TRM when they were seeking a design solution to modernize the out-dated and highly visible Hamburg store which no longer fit their spatial requirements. This project included extensive interior and exterior renovations as well as two additions: one to the main entry and a 14,400 sq. ft. main addition to the south side of the existing 40,000 sq. ft. building. The project included a major face-lift to the exterior of the building to give the facility a more prominent presence on the busy intersection of Southwestern and McKinley in the town of Hamburg. The interior of the store was completely reworked including the removal of nearly all of the existing partitions and finishes.
The exterior of the store was rebranded to appear more welcoming through the use of warmer colors and classic architectural detailing more common in residential and smaller scale designs including masonry wrapped columns, arches, traditional pediments and cornices that help to unify store designs and break away from the typical “big box” appearance of large supermarkets. The interior focused on creating an easy to shop layout while adding the experiential appeal of a market-like environment that is colorful and enticing. Each food section, from the bakery and prepared food, to produce or seafood is clearly defined, each having a different experiential quality creating a “store within a store” feel popular to modern supermarket design. Focusing on the experiential properties of the store and providing convenience through differentiating spaces and products creates an environment where customers are likely to stay and shop longer because it feels less like a chore. TRM also increased the functionality of the store by assessing the current customer circulation patterns. The existing store contained only one main entrance which funneled customers and carts through an inner set of doors essentially causing a traffic jam. The new design creates two spacious entrances and cart storage areas that greatly improves the experience of customers entering and existing the store while wide store aisles also provide convenience during shopping. Clearly defined areas, well placed signage and material transitions help customers to navigate the store. TRM also phased the construction of the project to allow the store to remain open through construction causing minimal interruption to customers and staff.
This project was a challenging case of extensively reworking an outdated existing store. The design has allowed Tops Markets to offer greater customer service and selection to its customers while improving the store both aesthetically and functionally.
