In 2000, the North Tonawanda City School District challenged TRM to design their natatorium to meet the needs of a range of diverse groups and users. These included disabled persons and senior citizens as well as children and students ranging from toddler to adolescent.

 

Designed in conjunction with the Library/Media Center, North Tonawanda High Schoolʼs new natatorium represents a modern facility suited for todayʼs physical education requirements, as well as multiple athletic competitions and events. Prior to design, TRM worked with NTCSD to outline the schoolʼs potential needs regarding physical education: competition (including facilities for spectators and visiting teams); recreation; life-saving and water-safety instruction; synchronized swimming; water aerobics; sessions for disabled users; seniors; young children and other groups; and special activities.

 

Located in the heart of the educational campus, the pool is readily accessible to students, visitors, and facility maintenance personnel. Its clean, bright look provides an open and streamlined feel for its competitive users and active spectators. The six-lane indoor swimming pool facility, with seating for 450, includes an upper level viewing area and Athletic Director Suite.

 

In an effort to minimize the long-term corrosive implications of humid air within the natatorium, the ventilation system was designed to provide adequate ventilation for three major functions: user comfort, spectator comfort, and humidity extraction.
