After multiple successful projects under the 2008-2010 term contract with BSC, TRM was commissioned to design the first floor of the South Quad of Butler Library under the 2010-2012 term contract with Buffalo State College.
The project scope included the creation of new study and lounge spaces for students and faculty within an existing building including computer labs, a presentation room, technology lab, copy center, and professional development center. The project created a relaxing space in warm tones conducive to studying while maintaining a cohesive design that unifies the entire Butler Quad. The design includes spaces for quiet study as well as areas for relaxing and socializing including lounge spaces with flat panel TV screens allowing students to watch the news while working on their laptops as well as areas for eating and vending. The South Quad expansion doubled the study capacity and created a more secure entry to the media lab.
The project was completed successfully and on schedule despite challenges including the 24 hours a day operation of Butler Media lab throughout construction and working within the constraints of an existing facility. The project created a much needed refuge for students and faculty and aided in their education by including spaces and technology such as projection screens and viewing areas to advance presentation skills.
